University of Abuja students have called for the relocation of Fulani herdsmen encroaching on the institution ’s land.
They stated that the herdsmen constituted a security risk, noting that they were no longer comfortable with their presence on the campus grounds.
The Student Union President , Abdulaziz Ola , who who made the call at the Eminent Persons’ Forum organised by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command on Tuesday in Abuja urged the FCT minister to do something about the issue .
Ola said the herdsmen were settled on the land a few years after a communal clash , adding that UniAbuja authorities were not carried along before the decision was taken .
He said, “We want to appreciate the FCT Police Command for improving the security situation around our campus. They have stationed police and Civil Defence patrol teams by the gate.
“ We want to call the attention of the command and the Federal Government to the encroachment on the university land by Fulani herdsmen who constitute a security risk to the students. Initially, only a few of them were settled on the land, but their numbers have increased as many of them keep coming to live on our lands .
“ We are not comfortable with their presence and we want the government to relocate them to a different place , a far place from the campus where they are currently staying. ”
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, said the forum was organised to combat crime in partnership with the community leaders and to build confidence between the police and the people.
According to him, the forum was also expected to enhance community and intelligence-led policing and to erode mutual suspicion between the Force and the community.
“ I urge you all to key into this laudable initiative of the Inspector- General of Police with a view to collectively tackle the menace of crime in the FCT and environs ,” the CP told the participants.
