As we were told that we are going to see the statue of Moremi,I was so excited but I contained it and reserved my cool.So I am about to see the statue of the great woman whom i have read about in books when I was in JSS.So we arrived at the gate and there she stood in magnificence and candour. She looks extraordinary and dashing and I fell in love with the sculptor immediately for bringing such a figure back to life in a gigantic and gorgeous form. With her flowing 'iro' and adornment of gold, she carries a torch;a torch of freedom and victory.Victory for women who has been largely commonised in a patriachal society, freedom of invasion for Ife people who has been largely enslaved by fake 'iwin' of ugbo kingdom. To ugbo people, she is a betrayal,an harlot,an evil woman,a reincarnation of the biblical Eve but to Ife people she is a hero,a cunning one at that, who used her cunning skills to free her people.
Moremi displayed bravery for allowing herself to be captured in the first place.Bravery that have so eluded our women today.Women that cant speak against brideprice but rather in support of it because "it is our culture" or women who cant speak against FGM because they are scared of societal acceptance. Some women have actually done great things in our society but so many women are still sleeping.
She displayed intelligence and an uncommon inquisitiveness among women by continuing asking and asking questions from the ugbo king until she gathered the needed information. She was a live spy.A female 'JAMES BOND'.The intelligence community would have been fighting on whom to employ her.Such intelligence is very scarce these days. Most women you want to discuss with will rather talk about the latest Jennifer's diary episode in town.
Women should emulate the strenght, courage and bravery of Moremi.
They should refuse to be lets down by the the patriachal society.
They should stand up and claim positions in authority.
They should use their intelligence for something worth remembering.
