Niger power plant to boost national grid by 700 megawatts - FG

Power, works and housing minister Raji Fashola has said the government is building power plants in Niger state that would soon boost power supply in the country

- Fashola said the Zungeru Hydro power plant which is currently being built by Chinese companies will add 700 megawatts to the current level

The federal government has confirmed that it is set to boost the current power supply level in the country by not less than 700 megawatts that will be added to the national power grid.

This was confirmed by the minister of power, works and housing Babatunde Raji Fashola in a statement issued by Etore Thomas, the deputy director, press in the power ministry.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fashola said the additional megawatts would come from the Zungeru Hydro power plant which is currently under construction in Niger state.

It is a great and feasible feat that would boost the provision of electricity supply nation-wide.

It is a good omen for the attainment of the present administration’s thrust of providing incremental, sustainable and uninterrupted power supply which Nigerians are yearning for.

The statement also revealed that Niger state is also playing host to three other power plants that will equally add massive wattage to the national power grid.

“Niger State is housing yet another power project of 700MW; apart from the three other power projects already sited in the state, namely, Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro,” NAN quoted Niger state governor Abubakar Bello, who was represented by the state commissioner for works and transport Abdulmalik Cheche, as saying.

Fashola was represented by the director of energy resources in the power ministry Emmanuel Ajayi.

Recall that just recently the power supply in the country dropped drastically after the country's biggest power plant Egbin dropped to a very low level.
