I was an aspiring science student.I don't know why but I never understood science very well,I was more inclined towards literature and Arts. But the rush then is that only the most intelligent students study science.I had some sort of glitch in my Junior exams probably because of the incompetence of the state ministry of Education.I even sat down to write entrance exams into Wesley college of science at Elekuro.Back then,my school had a counsellor,a counsellor only in name and not in action. He never asked us for once to visit him and talk about career goals and options. He was busy running up and down to get "Orijo" for us in the exam.Of course we never knew it's not normal, thats the way things were done.My brother also had the same experience of this "orijo" from the same man.Although some people knew they were going to be arts student, some of us were confused and we believed that we should hang out with the "jagaban of books" in science class. Our counsellor was no where to be found.Like I said,a counsellor only in name.
Exam came and went, the vice principal administration then put each student into Science,Commercial and Arts not minding and seeking their opinion. Some that were put into Science class rejected it and said they prefer Arts. But some students had a decisive mind and demanded to study in the arts.Well,i was thrown into arts class because of my result even though I was in science class before the result came out.Need I say that,I hated every minute of it.The chemistry teacher is full of shit, she is not actually interested in teaching but in selecting the number of students who will help her fetch water.
So arts class it is.My first class then was a government class,I sighed and I thought,I have found my calling.I did excellently well in literature and government that my teachers thought that I am the second coming of Christ.I was able to analyse literary works with ease and of course I could memorise a whole poem of 50 lines in a day(i still remember some of those poems).
The point of my story is to catch the attention of the readers towards the bad and uninspiring education I recieved as a teenager. The school curriculum is sometimes okay e.g the presence of a counsellor. But the counsellor refused to do his job which has tons of effect on me and a whole lots of other people
Also it is important that students should be critically analysed to know what certain part of education actually suit them. The rush to science class must stop and results should not be used as criteria for putting students in class(a friend of mine Biola Histobiola had to change from Arts to science 2 years after we finished secondary because he struggled to cope in Art class).
Parent should also stop putting their children under compulsion that they should go to science class.A lots of people are regretting that they studied science instead of arts.
