UNN probes suspected student’s suicide

A uthorities of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, and the Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police have commenced investigation into the suspected suicide by a final year Agric Economics student of UNN, Tobechukwu Okeke.
Okeke’s lifeless body was found dangling from a rope in his room located off campus, last Sunday, with a suicide note left on his table.
The university is said to be using the suicide note to commence investigation on the possible lead to the cause of the suspected suicide.
On its part, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ebere Amaraizu said its operatives have commenced full investigation into the alleged suicide.
Police said the lifeless body of the deceased who hailed from Awgu local government area of the state was seen with a blue rope on his neck, hung on the ceiling fan hook inside his room.
The PPRO said: “Recovered from the scene is a note from the deceased to his friends, relations, Linguistics Department of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, bidding goodbye to them. Some of the excerpts from the note read : ‘I got it all wrong when I rejected Jesus. God gave me wisdom. God gave me all I needed to succeed but I rejected Him. My fellow gamblers, I am sorry. My fellow lions, I am sorry. My family, I let you all down,’ amongst others.”
Amaraizu further disclosed that the corpse of the deceased was deposited at Bishop Shanahan Mortuary Nsukka.
Some students who commented on the suspected suicide expressed shock at the development, while others doubted if the act was actually a suicide or murder.
He was described as a good guy who nobody expected would have committed suicide. He was also alleged to have been involved in the money spinning networking business, Mavrodi Mondial Movement, MMM, and is feared may have borrowed money that he couldn’t pay back.
Graduates 96 medical doctors
In another development, the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu campus has graduated 96 medical doctors in the 2015/2016 academic year.
Performing the induction and swearing-in ceremony at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, the UNN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba said the graduating students passed through a lot of training and experiences before attaining success in their chosen course.
Ozumba disclosed that over 200 students were admitted in the first year but 96 of the lot were able to scale through the rigorous training to become doctors.
The Vice Chancellor stated that the management is committed to restructuring the falling standard of the college of medicine.
He urged the new medical doctors to always approach the university for assistance whenever they encounter challenges.
Delivering the welcome address, the Dean Faculty of Medical Sciences, Prof. H. U Ezegwui commended the graduating students for their perseverance and hard work which saw them through.
“This is not the end, you have enormous responsibilities, and the remarkable experiences you had and shared have shaped your ideas and choices in life.”
A parent, Mr. Ejike Oji expressed satisfaction over his daughter’s graduation and urged parents to always support their children.
